The American Helicopter Society has officially declared AeroVelo winner of the Igor I. Sikorsky Human Powered Helicopter Competition. The AHS Sikorsky competition began in 1980, and the prize was destined for anyone able to stay at least 10 feet in the air for at least 60 seconds within a 30' x 30' space using a flying machine powered solely by a single human. No team has ever managed to meet all of the requirements — until now. AeroVelo Atlas Human-Powered Helicopter captured the long standing AHS Sikorsky Prize with a flight lasting 64.1 seconds and reaching an altitude of 3.3 metres. Canadian Todd Reichert and his team have just been awarded $250,000 and the honor of building something that really worked. Reichert said: "This isn't something that you’re going to commute to work in any time soon, but it’s an exercise in really pushing the limits on what’s physically possible, and what you can do with lightweight materials and really creative design. Winning this competition really is a catalyst to keep doing the things we love. Our goal is to take on projects that really inspire people to follow big dreams.”

The Level Wall Shelf by Barcelona based designer Roger Moliné. "Level is divided into two parts. The first are the pivots, they allow a proper grip on any kind of wall and also articulate the movement of the fabric. These parts are composed of a shaft with bearings which allow rotation of the cylinder which supports the fabric."
If you're willing to drop the requisite $58,000, you can cruise the fairway (not to mention the rough and water obstacles) in a BW1 of your very own. It comes complete with a 65-hp twin-cylinder Hirth engine and promises enough power to reach 45 mph. "Powered by a 65-hp twin-cylinder Hirth engine, its nine-blade axial-flow ducted fan propels the craft up to 45 mph and 9″ off the ground without harming grass, allowing immediate crossing of a pond or stream to follow-up a cross-water shot. The fan’s streamlined design minimizes noise, speeds up an 18-hole outing, and conveys four passengers beneath a lift-up roof and two golf bags in an open rear compartment. Motorcycle-style handlebars steer the craft, controlling its patented fly-by-wire reverse thrust system, which provides braking and backwards hovering up to 25 mph – the only hovercraft in the world to do so."
