Chinese student hatches an egg house

Chinese student hatches an egg house
Home  |  Building

Dai Haifei, 24, a newly graduated architect, decided to make his own egg-style home after being unable to afford Beijing’s sky-high rental prices. Built for just $960, the egg-shaped house is portable, and features a water tank, a small bed, and a lamp powered by a solar panel on the top of the structure. Haifei successfully lived in the structure on the street for a few months until local media attention forced him to abandon his tiny bamboo palace.

Emilie Cazi's birdhouse

Emilie Cazis birdhouse
Home  |  Design
Designed by Emilie Cazin, she created this Birdhouse to attract birds to her balcony on her high-rise apartment.
"Lacking a garden in her LEGO like apartment building, Emilie Cazin created this Birdhouse in order to attract birds to her balcony and thus stand out from all the piled up apartments with the same windows, same walls, same balconies. The uniform balcony is transformed into a lookout for bird watchers. Birdhouse, with form that refers to, but clearly deviates from he parabolic antennas in the cityscape, is an invitation to the city’s birds to nest close to one’s window. "

Staircase by Danny Kuo.
"The most efficient way to build is vertically.
Building vertically saves space as it uses minimal ground square meters. When it comes to interior design, the same rule can be applied. By focusing on height rather than width, efficient storage designs can be created. However, high storage designs can create a new problem because the higher storage parts will be difficult to reach. My Staircase is a shelving unit that combines a bookshelf with a pullout stair system in the bottom three shelves. The shelving unit is 2.6 meters high and the top shelves are accessible by using the bottom shelves as steps for accessing the higher shelves

Gigantic Domed City

Gigantic Domed City

Gigantic Domed City
Home  |  Building
A Russian company has unveiled plans to built a 100,000-person domed city in an abandoned Mir diamond mine in Siberia. The city named Eco-city 2020. The Mir diamond mine is the second largest excavated hole in the world, quarter-mile wide and over 1,700 feet deep, the mine would be completely covered over with a glass dome to protect the city from the weather in Siberia, and the solar cells embedded in the dome would power the city.  Designers AB Elise explained:
"The new city is planned to be divided in 3 main levels with a vertical farm, forests, residences, and recreational areas. On of the most interesting aspects of the proposal is the glass dome that will protect the city and would be covered by photovoltaic cells that will harvest enough solar energy for the new development. "
An estimated 100,000 people would be able to live in Eco-city, and architects are hoping that it would help to attract tourists to Eastern Siberia

One Perfect Cube

One Perfect Cube
Home  |  Clock

[ video: ]Time lapse video showing the work running for 24 hours.

The work "One Perfect Cube" consists of three synchronized clocks that form a sign every 12 hours for exactly one second.
"When working with complex systems - which in a way a clock can be thought of as, looking at all it's possible 43200 constellations within 12 hours - the main focus has to be put on finding or shaping the right development tools first. To be able to try different symbols and texts to embed into "One Perfect Cube" a custom layout software was built in Processing. It allows one to freely place, scale and adjust time on a multitude of clocks. Every time a clock is added or changed the software would check for possible collisions between the clocks and would arrange the clocks on different yet as few as possible layers to allow the hands of two clocks to pass one another. A virtual master clock can be used to test the sculpture at different times. "
