War is dominating the news right now. But that makes it easy to miss that, relatively, there is a lot less of it today. The 21st century has been the most peaceful one in modern history to date. Zack Beauchamp explains three of the biggest reasons why in two and a half minutes.

    Chainmail Running Shoes
    Gear  |  Sport

Jörg Peitzker calls his invention Paleo Barefoots. Running barefoot provides complete feedback, but also puts the runner at risk of stepping on something sharp and painful. Additionally, running barefoot on mud can get slippery. Peitzker thinks that his chainmail shoes provide the right balance between feeling the road and getting injured by it. Chainmail also provides excellent traction. And if you run through mud or water, it’s easy to wash and dry off.

fonhandle Your iPhone needed a Handle
    Gear  |  Apple
It’s called Fonhandle($13), and it’s an iPhone case with a long handle attached. Or rather, it’s a handle for your iPhone. It is currently up for funding on Kickstarter.
"Fonhandle is inspired by hafting, the act of attaching artifacts to a handle which turns them into useful objects. Humans have used this method throughout history to turn rock, metal and bone into axes and hammers, then later on – simple lenses into magnifying glasses, and then – rubber nets into fly swatters. Now it is time to do the same with the most useful object of all – the smartphone.
Fonhandle enhances your mobile experience. It opens a world of new photographic and videographic opportunities, better ergonomics, easier web browsing and other uses that have yet been discovered."

This Could Be the Future of Military Helicopters
    Gear  |  Military

Built as part of AVX's bid for the US Army's lucrative Army's Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstrator (JMR-TD) program, the AVX concept aircraft looks to supplement the roles currently played by Black Hawk, Apache, and Chinook helicopters. The dual primary rotors of this 27,000 pound concept aircraft are expected to provide enough lift to pick up 13,000 pounds of cargo (slung externally) or 12 fully-equipped combat troops in addition to 4 crew members while the stubby wings on the fuselage should generate up to 40 percent of the vehicle's lift when moving forward, supplementing the two ducted fans in the rear.

"The space between the tram tracks in Bratislava is 435 mm narrower than the gauge of tracks in Prague or Pilsen (1435 mm). The wooden europallet, a basic feature of any warehouse or storage hall, with its standartized 1200x800 mm dimensions, when modified can only run on the tracks in Bratislava"

Simon Toland of Simon’s Cat is currently raising funds to make “Off to the Vet“ on indiegogo.
"We love reading your comments as it helps us understand what you like about our films and what you might like to see next. There is one theme that many fans have requested and it’s one that Simon would really like to make too – it’s the theme of going to the vet. Simon has been developing ideas around the vet theme for some time now. With so many ideas and gags, we feel this film deserves to be longer than our usual YouTube episodes and that this is the perfect opportunity to do something a little different!…That’s why we’re asking our fans to get behind us and help us make a film that we can all be proud of. ‘Off to the Vet’ will be made by the fans, for the fans!"
