While filming coral off the Solomon Islands, David Gruber, a National Geographic Emerging Explorer, encountered a "bright red-and-green spaceship." This underwater UFO turned out to be a hawksbill sea turtle, which is significant because it's the first time that biofluorescence has ever been seen in reptiles, according to Gruber. Gruber is now excited to learn more about this critically endangered species and how it is using biofluorescence.

Signs of Liquid Water Found on Surface of Mars
    Gear  |  News

This animation simulates a fly-around look at one of the places on Mars where dark streaks advance down slopes during warm seasons, possibly involving liquid water. This site is within Hale Crater. The streaks are roughly the length of a football field.
These dark, narrow, 100 meter-long streaks called recurring slope lineae flowing downhill on Mars are inferred to have been formed by contemporary flowing water. Recently, planetary scientists detected hydrated salts on these slopes at Hale crater, corroborating their original hypothesis that the streaks are indeed formed by liquid water. The blue color seen upslope of the dark streaks are thought not to be related to their formation, but instead are from the presence of the mineral pyroxene. The image is produced by draping an orthorectified (Infrared-Red-Blue/Green(IRB)) false color image (ESP_030570_1440) on a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of the same site produced by High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (University of Arizona). Vertical exaggeration is 1.5. Credits: NASA/JPL/University of Arizona
NASA just revealed that it's also present on the planet's surface today, the New York Times reports. Scientists have detected evidence of hydrated salts on the surface of Mars, which are produced by liquid water. [ NASA Link ]
In a paper published in the journal Nature Geoscience, Dr. McEwen and other scientists identified waterlogged molecules — salts of a type known as perchlorates — in readings from orbit.
“That’s a direct detection of water in the form of hydration of salts,” Dr. McEwen said. “There pretty much has to have been liquid water recently present to produce the hydrated salt.”
By “recently,” Dr. McEwen said he meant “days, something of that order.”

Minnesota-based company Janulus  built its first functioning wind turbine prototype and are now on a mission to manufacture four different sized ‘trinity’ power stations.  Last year, janulus successfully crowdfunded the first version of Trinity, and now it has returned to Kickstarter with an entire series of compact turbines in varying sizes.  Trinity comes with a 50, 400, 1000, and 2500 watt generators from 7500 to 300,000 mAh lithium ion batteries, weighing only from 650 grams. The wind turbines fold together into a cylinder making it easy to carry and travel with. by simply pulling out the blades and arranging the legs in either a tripod configuration or laid flat, the system is straightforward to organize. The larger ones can be set up outside your home and plugged directly into an outlet without requiring any additional wiring or electrical know-how. says Agust Agustsson, vice president of Janulus. "The smaller versions are very lightweight and are perfect for camping and charging your gadgets." Early-bird pledges for the Trinity 50 start at $400 and $5,600 for the Trinity 2500, with other sizes and prices available in between.

Japanese Tokyo-based H2L has created the UnlimitedHand will let you feel virtual reality.  the UnlimitedHand looks, and is worn, almost like an iPhone exercise arm band, sans iPhone. But inside this armband is a haptic sensor, as well as an array of tiny, multi-channel electronic muscle stimulators (EMS). The haptic sensor can measure how you are moving your arm, and move it accordingly within a VR world; meanwhile, the EMS array sends a series of finely tuned electronic pulses coursing through your muscles, allowing you to feel low-granular sensations like resistance, or even discomfort.  According to H2L, the UnlimitedHand can be used to simulate bodily encounters, like the sensation of touching, pinching, stroking, or grabbing onto something in a virtual world. It can also simulate pain, although one imagines without too much fidelity, since H2L calls it "occasions of being inflicted within damage within games."
"UnlimitedHand consists of the muscle sensor, 3D motion sensor,  multi-channel electronic muscle stimulator (EMS) and vibration motor. With motion sensor and muscle sensors, users can input their hand and finger motion. Moreover, the device can output finger motion with EMS as a feedback from the video game. By integrating this technology into our game controller, affects such as bodily encounters and occasions of being inflicted with damage within games can be felt in person.   "
Currently on Kickstarter, the UnlimitedHand's downside seems to be cost: they start at $188.
