    Gear  |  Projects
GUNS (2009). Sculpture, resin and found objects, 15x79x60cm. No human hands pull the trigger. The gun/mob appears to take on a life of its own. Guns induces a sense of sadness and helplessness. Limp, wasted, lifeless miniature people suggest the impotence of war. The work impacts by using visual ambiguity. The multitude of colours implies playfulness, only to induce, on closer scrutiny, confusion and doubt.

    Motorized Bionic Leg
    Gear  |  Tech
Researchers at  Vanderbilt University in Tennessee has developed amputees a bionic "to walk without the leg-dragging gait characteristic of conventional artificial legs". Unlike the average peg-leg, the Vanderbilt leg has motors in the knee and ankle to actively move like the real thing. Sensors and microprocessors predict what the user is about to do and the leg moves accordingly.  The leg itself is also pretty light on power, running for up to three days (or 14 kilometers) on a single charge.

    the moon
    Gear  |  Video
This video will make you think twice about how we see things. "The prop in the video may look like an oversize checkerboard, but the squares are actually the same color." Check out the video.
"The illusion works because of the "shadow" that falls on the checkerboard. Lets think of the square that the shadow falls on. Now picture that the shadow doesnt exist, you would see a light colored square surrounded by the dark colored squares. But when the shadow falls on top of that light colored square, the shadow causes the shade to become darker but it also causes the surrounding darker squares to become darker. So within the shadow region the brightness and darkness of the squares are still relative to one another. But they are no longer relative to the squares that lie outside of the shadow.
So if you were able to pick up the middle square and move it to one of the outside dark squares, they would be 2 different shades, But the trick is ..that when you move the square you are moving it WITH the shadow still printed on the square. So now you've moved it out of its relative area, outside of the shadow region (but with the shadow still printed on the square) ..to the area where it's the same shade as the "dark" square. "

TableDrum App Turns Your Incessant Finger Drumming Into Actual Drum
    Gear  |  Apple

The Table Drum Augmented Audio application allows iOS device users to turn that acoustic finger pounding into digitized drum sounds, in real time. The app works like a drum pad but instead of tapping the screen to trigger samples, it uses the microphone to listen for taps from your fingers. It’s smart enough to distinguish between 4 different sounds too. So the sound of your finger tapping the dinner table could be used to trigger a high hat sound, while the clink of your fork on your glass could trigger a kick drum sound.
It's available now from the iTunes Store for US$3.99 .

Maxwell von Stein, a 22 year-old Cooper Union graduate, built a bicycle that uses a flywheel to store energy. Instead of braking, he will slow the bicycle down by transferring the kinetic energy from back wheel into the flywheel—which spins between the bars of the frame. When he needs an energy boost, he will be able to send the flywheel energy back to the wheel. Check out the video of Flywheel Bicycle.
Google to Buy Motorola Mobility for $125 Billion
    Gear  |  News
In a bid to strengthen its mobile business, Google is buying up Motorola Mobility (the Motorola cellphone business) for $40 a share in cash, or $12.5 billion...by far Google’s largest ever for an acquisition — is 63 percent above the closing price of Motorola Mobility shares on Friday.
“This is an emphatic exclamation point that Google is a mobile company,” said Ben Schachter, an analyst with Macquarie Capital. “This is clearly a defensive deal, they were backed in a corner and they had to protect the Android platform.” [ link ]
