ES Pipe Waterwheel produces hydroelectricity

ES Pipe Waterwheel produces hydroelectricity
Gear  |  Design

The ES Pipe Waterwheel is created by Korean innovator Ryan Jongwoo Choi. The concept works as a mini turbine to harness hydropower from regular water taps and converts it to energy. However this energy is for a specific use; to power specialized bulbs. The intended area of use is a country like Africa where there is severe power shortage. On paper, the idea looks good enough to execute, however how large scale can this go, remains to be seen.

Eco-friendly ATM booth

Ecofriendly ATM booth
Gear  |  Design
This eco-friendly ATM booth is developed by Brazilian Edra Equipamentos. Different from the conventional ones, the walls and ceiling of the booth are built from a polymer derived from a combination of recycled plastic, such as PET bottles, and renewable sources, such as oilseed plants. A photovoltaic solar panel on the roof powers the booth's LED lighting at night, while during the day natural light floods in through a clear "Solatube" system coated with a film from 3M that blocks more than 80 percent of infrared rays to help keep the interior cool.

cranes lifting each other

Gear  |  Video
The above video is of a bunch of massive cranes to lift each other. Cool
It’s “the most powerful crawler crane in the world of conventional design”, capable of lifting up to 3,000 tonnes at 12 meters. In the video however, the presenter says it’s got a capacity of 1,521 tonnes. This discrepancy in lifting capacity is probably due to the fact that it’s lifting further away than 12 meters in this particular setting. All the other cranes combine to a weight of roughly 1,430 tonnes, so it’s working at 94% capacity.

Lampbrella, romantic and creative

Lampbrella by Mikhail Belyaev
Gear  |  Design
This is a concept design to encourage people to meet potential partners in the streets. What a romantic solution! The Lampbrella design, which is created by Mikhail Belyaev, incorporates a rain and motion sensor into the shaft of the streetlamp and opens up the umbrella canopy when it rains. It's a clever integration of a street lamp and umbrella, but my only worry is that it may end up injuring someone while opening or closing.

Old School Book Strap

Old School Book Strap
Gear  |  DIY
Old School Book Strap made by Portland's designer Wood&Faulk. Check out more see more pics.
"First thing, cut your wool blanket material in the shape of a T. The top is 5 inches wide and 3 inches tall. The overall height is about 12 inches. This length gives you a long flap to protect your book from the buckle area. Cut your leather to a strap of 1.5 inches wide and at least 48 inches long. You can make it longer or shorter to your preference, and longer if you want a looped handle.
Take both material pieces and lay them out together and apply some contact cement to one end of the strap and lay it glue up in the T. Fold the T ends to the glued center to make the pencil holders. Bring the strap back over the glue strip with the rings included. Press together and allow to dry. The glue is to keep things together before stitching and add some stiffness to the assembly.
Once dry, sew everything together using some thick thread. You can sew it on a machine, or hand sew. Final step, stroll to the library with the look of a literary connoisseur
