AutoBrewery Syndrome A Man s Gut Brews Its Own Beer and Gets Him Drunk When He Eats
    Gear  |  News
A 61-year-old man found himself getting drunk without ever drinking alcohol because he had brewer's yeast in his gut. Basically, whenever he ate any carbs, the man's intestinal tract would start turning that into beer and make him drunk. He had a brewery in his belly. The man had been recorded with a 0.37 BAC level without drinking at all, or almost five times the legal limit for driving in Texas.
    The NPR explains:
The patient had an infection with Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Cordell says. So when he ate or drank a bunch of starch — a bagel, pasta or even a soda — the yeast fermented the sugars into ethanol, and he would get drunk. Essentially, he was brewing beer in his own gut. Cordell and McCarthy reported the case of "auto-brewery syndrome" a few months ago in the International Journal of Clinical Medicine.

Pressy Kickstarter project raises over 500 000
    Gear  |  Projects
The next big project from crowd-funded website Kickstarter is Pressy. This is a button that fits into the 3.5mm earphone jack on an Android phone and can be set-up to do a number of things with your handset like toggle Wi-Fi on and off, act as the shutter for the camera, or start an audio recording. Anything your phone can do can be set up to run using Pressy. The very first day, the project received twice the $40,000 it was seeking and is now up to more than $500,000 in funding. What will the company do with all of this money? For one thing, they are creating a push-to-talk system they call Pressy-to-talk. Just hold your Pressy button and talk. The other party will hear you and can communicate with you as long as they too have a Pressy button. Expected to come to market in March 2014. The lowest price funding option still remaining that comes with a Pressy is $17, which includes a Pressy and free access to the corresponding app.

Nikon AW1 is the world s first waterproof interchangeablelens digital
    Gear  |  Camera
The Nikon AW1 is the world's first digital camera with interchangeable lenses that is waterproof to 49-feet deep without any protective housing and can withstand the shock of a fall from up to 6.6-feet. And the pop-up flash is waterproof and works underwater. While the camera technically works with any Nikon 1 series lens, it's only waterproof when you're using one of two new lenses: The AW 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 and the AW 10mm f/2.8. The camera will sell in a kit with the 11-27.5 lens for $800, or in a two-lens kit with both optics sets for $1000. Considering the waterproof housing Nikon offers for its J1 and J2 1-series cameras costs more that $500 on its own, the price of the total package seems pretty reasonable. The AW1 features 14.2-megapixel CX-format sensor and 6400 top ISO, along with 1080p video capture, but the new model adds thrill-seeker essentials like an altimeter, depth gauge, GPS, compass and an accelerometer-powered option for switching modes with one hand. The Nikon 1 AW1 and waterproof lenses will be available in October.

    Popculture characters painted on coins
    Gear  |  Pic
Frankfurt-based Brazilian designer Andre Levy paints tiny pop culture characters on these tiny coins. The project cleverly titled "Tales you Lose", started out as a series of instagram posts trying to inject some fun into ordinary change. "Coins are actually massively-reproduced little sculptures. This project brings individual character to each replica, and makes us think: Are we able to like one cent more than others, just by injecting new stories in it?" says Levy.
