A map of the worst countries in the world in which to be a
    Gear  |  Pic
The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), a trade group alliance that works to improve laborers' rights around the globe, released its Global Rights Index this week. Countries are ranked from 1 (best) to 5 (worst) on a scale of how well they guard workers' rights. Cambodia, Qatar, and Guatemala were among the worst offenders.
"The ITUC Global Rights Index ranks 139 countries against 97 internationally recognised indicators to assess where workers’ rights are best protected, in law and in practice.
“Countries such as Denmark and Uruguay led the way through their strong labour laws, but perhaps surprisingly, the likes of Greece, the United States and Hong Kong, lagged behind,” said ITUC general secretary Sharan Burrow.
"A country’s level of development proved to be a poor indicator of whether it respected basic rights to bargain collectively, strike for decent conditions, or simply join a union at all.”
    Key findings:
    • In the past year, governments of at least 35 countries have arrested or imprisoned workers as a tactic to resist demands for democratic rights, decent wages, safer working conditions and secure jobs.
    • In at least 9 countries murder and disappearance of workers were commonly used to intimidate workers.
    • Workers in at least 53 countries have been dismissed or suspended for attempting to negotiate better working conditions.
    • Laws and practices in at least 87 countries exclude certain type of workers from the right to strike."
    Here's the report PDF.

Dubai Police Will Use Google Glass
    Gear  |  News
Police in Dubai have begun using Google Glass as part of an effort to crack down on traffic violations. This week traffic officers are testing the wearable devices, and they intend to use the wearable gadget to identify wanted vehicles and also to issue fines to motorists. The Dubai Police developed two custom applications: one to capture and upload photos of traffic violators, and another to identify wanted cars based on licensed plate numbers.
"If it passes our testing criteria as well as we see that it is a useful device, then we might decide to launch it and buy more of it," Al Razooqi said. Using the apps developed by his unit, police can capture and upload photos to the department's database by tapping the side of the headset, and can capture license numbers simply by looking at a car's plates. These numbers will be automatically cross-referenced against a central database to flag any wanted cars.

A Japanese company Sending A Can Of Powdered Energy Drink To The Moon Next
    Gear  |  News
Japanese drink manufacturer Otsuka plans to send a can of powdered energy drink to the moon's surface in October, 2015.
"Japanese beverage maker Otsuka is sending a 1 kilogram titanium can filled with powdered sports drink and children's dreams to the moon. The specially designed canister, which contains a shipment of Otsuka's Pocari Sweat powder, will mark a disturbing new frontier for humanity: the first commercial product delivered to another world for marketing purposes.
The canister will be carried to the lunar surface aboard the first planned private moon-landing mission, set to take place in October 2015. Otsuka says it hopes that the stunt will inspire young people to become astronauts, so they can travel the 380,000 kilometers (236,121 miles) to our closest celestial neighbor, crack open the can, and consume the powder inside.
The capsule will be conveyed to the moon by the Falcon 9 rocket. The Falcon 9, designed to be a potentially reusable means of space travel by Elon Musk's SpaceX, has already made three successful supply runs to the International Space Station, but the planned mission in October 2015 would be the first time one of its rockets has successfully provided propulsion to the moon."
