    Gear  |  News

Hua Chi, 70, is a monk at the Buddhist monastery in Tongren, Qinghai province, China. The pious man has knelt to pray in the exact same spot for nearly 20 years now. He’s performed the ritual so many times that his footprints are deeply ingrained in the wooden floor of his temple. When he was younger, he did it about 2,000-3,000 times a day. Now that he's aged, Hua says, he does it a mere 1,000 times a day. The result of his work over 20 years is that his footprints are now marked an inch and a half deep into the wood.

The person says they intend to stash cash once or twice a week and have no plans to stop. There is nothing commercial behind this. It is a social experiment," they wrote. "I’ve made millions of dollars the last few years, more than I ever imagined, and yet many friends of mine, and people who work for me, cannot afford to buy a modest home in the Bay Area. My body was shattered and I was in agony. My face hit one wall, my back and stomach hit the back wall and I bounced between them. My face was pretty torn up. I landed on a piece of ice at a midpoint.

    The DEKA Arm System
    Gear  |  Tech

Last week, the FDA approves the Deka arm, the first commercial mind-controlled prosthetic arm. The new Deka arm (codenamed Luke, after Luke Skywalker’s artificial hand) was developed by Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway. The Deka Arm System is a battery-powered device that blends multiple approaches. Some of the Deka’s functions are controlled by myoelectricity, which means the device senses movement in various muscle groups via attached electrodes, then converts those muscle movements into motor control. This allows the user a more natural and (theoretically) intuitive method of controlling the arm rather than relying on a cross-body pulley system. The more advanced myoelectric systems can even transmit sensation back to the user.
