Jeff  builds his sons a homemade spaceship.
"I built a spaceship for my younger son’s room. It has a control panel full of interesting displays and whiz-bang space sounds. A joystick controls lights and sounds for the engine and thrusters. The payload bay has a motorized hatch and contains a robot arm that can be remotely operated over video feed to deploy payloads like toy satellites. Headsets provide an audio link between the spacecraft and Mission Control in the other room, so my sons can practice collaborating on their space missions. "

Photographer Jon Durr took this amazing time-lapse video of fans leaving Wembley Stadium on February 6, 2012, after the friendly game between England and Brazil.
"Here is a short time-lapse of fans leaving Wembley Stadium after Brazil played England in an international friendly on February 6, 2012. I was positioned on a bridge over the walkway in front of the Wembley Park tube station. The police use the horses to regulate the flow of people in to the tub station, so the platforms do not become dangerously crowded.
The match was obviously a sold out stadium of 90,000. The time-lapse begins about 20 minutes after the fans started leaving and about an hour elapses in it, so this is approximately 75% of the fans that left in this direction. A police officer told me that the space from the horses to the first black pole will have approximately 2,000-2,500 people when they are stopped

The Barisieur Alarm Clock doubles as a coffee
    Gear  |  Gadget
Designed by London-based industrial designer Josh Renouf, the Barisieur is an alarm clock that doubles as a coffee brewer.
The alarm clock looks like one of those classic rectangular digital alarm clock with a chemistry set on top of it. The base of the Barisieur is American walnut with a digital clock display. There are knobs on the side and a switch for the coffee brewer next to the digital display. A small drawer on the front serves as storage for the sugar and ground coffee beans.
The Barisieur first gently wakes you up with the sounds of steel ball bearings vibrating the water through induction heating, as well as with the smell of freshly brewed coffee.

Map Shows The Wealthiest Person In Each State
    Gear  |  Pic
America’s elite live vastly different lives than the rest of us. Those at the top have incomes that are orders of magnitude higher than the average person. Even when we compare their individual wealth with that of households in the states in which they live, there’s no comparison.
So how did they get to where they are? Are they all self-made entrepreneurs, or were they just lucky? Do they hoard all that wealth, or do they give back?

This map shows the wealthiest person in each US state.

The team used those data to create a movie that starts in 600 bc and ends in 2012. Each person's birth place appears on a map of the world as a blue dot and their death as a red dot. The result is a way to visualize cultural history — as a city becomes more important, more notable people die there. The work that the animated map is basedon was reported on 31 July in Science1.
The animation reflects some of what was known already. Rome gave way to Paris as a cultural centre, which was eventually overtaken by Los Angeles and New York. But it also puts figures and dates on these shifts — and allows for precise comparisons. For example, the data suggest that Paris overtook Rome as a cultural hub in 1789.
