GM's EN-V Concept

GMs ENV Concept
Car  |  Concept

EN-V is a two-seat electric vehicle that was designed to alleviate concerns surrounding traffic congestion, parking availability, air quality and affordability for tomorrow’s cities.
"EN-V is propelled by electric motors in each of its two driving-mode wheels. Dynamic stabilization technology empowers EN-V, giving it the unique ability to carry two passengers and light cargo in a footprint that’s about a third of a traditional vehicle. It can literally “turn on a dime” within its own operating envelope. In addition, everything in EN-V is drive-by-wire, supporting its ability to operate autonomously or under manual control. The motors not only provide power for acceleration, but also bring the vehicle to a stop.
Power for the motors is provided by lithium-ion batteries that produce zero emissions. Recharging can occur from a conventional wall outlet using standard household power, allowing EN-V to travel at least 40 kilometers on a single charge. EN-V can also improve the efficiency of the public electric infrastructure since the vehicle can communicate with the electric grid to determine the best time to recharge based on overall usage.
By combining the Global Positioning System (GPS) with vehicle-to-vehicle communications and distance-sensing technologies, the EN-V concept can be driven both manually and autonomously. "

Television host Dirk Gion and engineer Stefan Simmerer recently completed a 5,000 km (3,107 mile) journey across Australia-  titled The Wind Explorer,a lightweight electric vehicle powered only by electricity-generating wind turbine and a kite, and broke three world records in the process. To keep the electric Wind Explorer running, it could be recharged overnight using a porable 20-foot wind turbine (it can also be plugged in in the absence of wind). They could also deploy a kite if the breeze was strong enough, and use it to pull the vehicle along, it worked like parasailing.
The 18-day road trip gave way to three world records for the Germans. one for crossing a continent with a wind-powered vehicle for the first time, another for traveling the farthest in a wind-powered car over a 36 hour period, and a final one for the most distance ever covered by a wind-powered land vehicle. "In addition to monitoring your driving using an accelerometer, the Anti Sleep Pilot will give you a little reaction test every once in a while. It will make a sound and turn orange, at which point you have to smack it as fast as you can. The longer it takes you to do this, the more concerned the device gets about your reaction times, and if you're too slow on four tests in a row, it will turn an angry red and demand that you pull over and rest. Stormtrooper Hood Ornament

Stormtrooper Hood Ornament
Car  |  Other
Hayes Johnson installed the head of Stormtrooper from a McDonald’s Happy Meal into his Buick Park Avenue.
"The main component of my hood ornament is made from the head off of a McDonald’s toy. If you search online, it’s the one of a Stormtrooper driving a wind-up AT-AT. I removed the head from the rest of the toy, making sure to take out the spring that made the head bobble. I then filled the hollow head with resin, and drilled a hole into it that would serve as the mounting point. After I sanded the head with fine grit sand paper, making sure it was extra smooth, I painted the head metallic silver.
Next I removed the existing hood ornament from my car, which took some finesse and elbow grease. I removed the Buick emblem, but made sure to keep the base that actually mounted to the car. I then bought a nut and bolt from the local hardware store. I pushed the bolt up through the hole in the base of the old hood ornament, and screwed the nut down to hold the bolt in place. Then, finally, I screwed the Stormtrooper head down onto the bolt into the hole I had drilled earlier. Once that was done, I mounted it onto my car. Tada!

1930's Art Deco Henderson Motorcycle

1930s Art Deco Henderson Motorcycle
Car  |  Motorcycle
Frank Westfall's 1930 Art Deco Henderson motorcycle, which was built by O. Ray Courtney in 1936 and is based on a 1930 K.J Henderson. Grail Mortillaro of Knucklebuster spotted the bike at the Rhinebeck Grand National Super Meet. The bike is powered by inline four cylinder and with the enclosed wheels and long wheelbase. It looks a bit unwieldy, and tough to ride, but Grail Mortillaro says he saw Westfall take the bike for a spin around the fairgrounds. Knucklebuster writes:
"I took these photos at the Rhinebeck Grand National Meet where the newly restored bike was unveiled. The bike belongs to Frank Westfall from Syracuse, NY. According to some info I found online, the bike was originally built by O. Ray Courtney in 1936 and is based on a 1930 K.J Henderson. The bike is powered by inline four cylinder (not a scooter as some have said, check the shot of the motor below) and as I’m sure you can gather by now, is a one-off custom. What I can confirm is it does run and while it looked a bit unwieldy, Frank could be seen riding the bike around the Fairgrounds all weekend. But let’s be honest here (and maybe I’m wrong) - you don’t have this bike in your stable to go out for a long Sunday afternoon ride to get some ice cream. That said, it was pretty awesome to see the bike being ridden (even when rain started to come down) instead of being sheltered behind a velvet rope, never to see the rubber touch asphalt again. The bike is a fantastic piece of history, the craftsmanship is absolutely stunning and it’s surely more of a museum piece than a daily rider. Frank has obviously spent an incredible amount of time meticulously restoring and rebuilding the bike to its current gorgeous state. Hats off to Frank for the amazing work he did and for sharing it with all us gawkers. "
