The design features the villainous Darth Vader wielding an icy lightsaber, flanked by a posse of three Stormtroopers. Following the festival’s tradition, Japanese army troops built Snow Star Wars, as it’s called.
"The Japanese military has been participating in the Sapporo Snow Festival since 1955, and considers the process of building sculptures up to 15 meters (50 feet) tall a training exercise. The weeklong festival, which runs until Feb. 11, is one of Japan’s largest winter events, expected to draw more than 2 million visitors this year."

Photographer Eric J. Smith snapped this shot near Redondo Beach, California. A man on a sailboat was texting while a humpback whale surfaced. He never noticed. ABC News (warning: auto-start video) quotes him:
"A small private sailboat maneuvered really close to the whales, and this guy on it was literally sitting in that position and never moved," Smith said. "He could have been texting his mom in the hospital for all I know, but I thought it sucked that he missed such a wonderful moment happening just two feet in front of him."

'Watermelon Brother',  a man who likes to put a watermelon on his head on Beijings's train. The Daily Telegraph reports:
One commuter told the Beijing Morning Post he was freaked out by the man who loves to put on the hollowed-out fruit helmet and reported him to police.
"It was so scary last night when I was on the metro,” he said.
“This guy was just hanging around on the train wearing a watermelon mask with a beer bottle … apparently he was totally drunk.”
"I was scared by this watermelon brother too," said another passenger. "I posted some pictures of him on Weibo.”
Beijing Metro Police questioned the man after being alerted to his location by passengers and subway staff
