A sadly story from yesterday's New York Times: Mason (above, with Martha Mason, who directed a documentary film about her.) was stricken with polio in 1948 at the age of 11. Martha spent the next year in hospitals before being sent home in an iron lung and with prognosis that she would live another year at most...
Martha Mason, Who Wrote Book About Her Decades in an Iron Lung, Dies at 71
Ever since the 1940s, when she was a girl in a small Southern town, Martha Mason dreamed of being a writer. But it was not till nearly half a century later, with the aid of a voice-activated computer, that she could begin setting a memoir down on paper.

Published in 2003, Ms. Mason¨s memoir, ^Breath, ̄ is not well known outside the Southeast, or perhaps even outside North Carolina, where she was born, grew up and died. It was published by a small regional house, Down Home Press, and was not widely reviewed. But the truly significant thing is that the book was written at all.

Ms. Mason died on Monday at her home in Lattimore, N.C. She was 71 and had lived for more than 60 years in an iron lung.

if you remembered the 13-year-old father Alfie Patten and 15 year-old mother Chantelle Steadman?
Now the DNA test show Alfie Patten is not a dad, wow! The 15 year-old Chantelle has cheated him, a poor boy?
"A DNA test showed a 13-year-old boy in Britain is not the father of a baby born to a 15-year-old he had unprotected sex with once.
Chantelle Stedman told Alfie Patten, who was 12 when he slept with her, he was her newborn daughter Maisie's father.
The story caused a worldwide media frenzy after it was first reported by Britain's Sun newspaper, while politicians criticised what they called Britain's declining morals.
At first Stedman said Patten was the only boy she had ever slept with, but soon after other teens came forward saying they too could be the baby's father, because they claimed to have had sex with the girl.
It is still not clear who the baby's father is."

"A wink, a smile or a raised eyebrow could change your music on your iPod or start up the washing machine." The device called the "Mimi Switch", it looks like a normal set of headphones but is fitted with a set of infrared sensors that measure the inner ear movements resulting from various facial expressions. "An iPod can start or stop music when the wearer sticks his tongue out.." says inventor, Kazuhiro Taniguchi of Osaka University. Cool! This device can also programmed to run with various other facial expressions, such as a wriggle of the nose or a smile." The device could also serve as a remote control for appliances for physically disabled people, from cameras and computers to air conditioners, or alert medical services if a person has a fit, he said.

Nasa wants to build a polar outpost on the Moon starting in 2020. The space agency is partnering CMU Robotics Institute and Astrobotic Technology to prepare a NASA-sponsored study describing a lunar outpost constructed by robots. The research examined two potential solutions: 1) construction of a berm around the landing site, and 2) creation of a hard-surface landing pad using indigenous materials. The first solution, two rovers weighing 330 pounds each would take less than six months to build a berm(8.5 feet tall in a 160-foot semi-circle) around a landing site to block the sandblasting effect. In the second solution, researchers showed how small robots could comb the lunar soil for rocks, gathering them to pave a durable grit-free landing pad.

13-year-old father Alfie Patten, 15 year-old mother Chantelle Steadman, their newborn baby Maisie and Playstation... I got this story from TV.
During the baby's first days out of the hospital, Patten and Steadman spent their time caring for the baby and playing Saints Row II. From UK tabloid The Sun:

The four-footer ! who looks no more than eight ! said: "I know I'm young, but I plan to be a good dad."

As he went on the PlayStation with 15-year-old girlfriend Chantelle Steadman, he added: "I think we'll be good parents. I'll have to work extra hard at school."

Chantelle looked up from 18-rated action game Saints Row II to admit her first night out of hospital since having 7lb 3oz daughter Maisie had been tough and had left her "in a daze".
They play the Saints Row II, the video game is for the adults, not kids. But maybe they are Adults! [ link ]
