The BBC convinced 13 year old Scott Campbell to swap his iPod for a Walkman and use it for a week. The first shock came just from seeing the thing:
[My Dad] had told me it was big, but I hadn¡¯t realised he meant THAT big. It was the size of a small book.
"As I boarded the school bus, where I live in Aberdeenshire, I was greeted with laughter. One boy said: "No-one uses them any more." Another said: "Groovy." Yet another one quipped: "That would be hard to lose."
My friends couldn't imagine their parents using this monstrous box, but there was interest in what the thing was and how it worked. " It gets worse from there. Wearing the 30 year old device on his belt (¡°it is certainly not pocket-sized, unless you have large pockets¡±) Scott felt embarrassed at the attentions of passersby as they stared and shouted insults.
Other problems included lack of a shuffle mode (¡°I managed to create an impromptu shuffle feature simply by holding down ¡°rewind¡± and releasing it randomly¡±), terrible battery life (three hours), sound quality (we¡¯d disagree ¡ª even a tape sounds better than the average MP3), and capacity (twelve tracks in your pocket!). Scott had some operational troubles, too: ¡°It took me three days to figure out that there was another side to the tape.¡± The ultimate insult comes at the end, though: "Did my dad, Alan, really ever think this was a credible piece of technology?"

A sadly story from yesterday's New York Times: Mason (above, with Martha Mason, who directed a documentary film about her.) was stricken with polio in 1948 at the age of 11. Martha spent the next year in hospitals before being sent home in an iron lung and with prognosis that she would live another year at most...
Martha Mason, Who Wrote Book About Her Decades in an Iron Lung, Dies at 71
Ever since the 1940s, when she was a girl in a small Southern town, Martha Mason dreamed of being a writer. But it was not till nearly half a century later, with the aid of a voice-activated computer, that she could begin setting a memoir down on paper.

Published in 2003, Ms. Mason¡¯s memoir, ¡°Breath,¡± is not well known outside the Southeast, or perhaps even outside North Carolina, where she was born, grew up and died. It was published by a small regional house, Down Home Press, and was not widely reviewed. But the truly significant thing is that the book was written at all.

Ms. Mason died on Monday at her home in Lattimore, N.C. She was 71 and had lived for more than 60 years in an iron lung.

if you remembered the 13-year-old father Alfie Patten and 15 year-old mother Chantelle Steadman?
Now the DNA test show Alfie Patten is not a dad, wow! The 15 year-old Chantelle has cheated him, a poor boy?
"A DNA test showed a 13-year-old boy in Britain is not the father of a baby born to a 15-year-old he had unprotected sex with once.
Chantelle Stedman told Alfie Patten, who was 12 when he slept with her, he was her newborn daughter Maisie's father.
The story caused a worldwide media frenzy after it was first reported by Britain's Sun newspaper, while politicians criticised what they called Britain's declining morals.
At first Stedman said Patten was the only boy she had ever slept with, but soon after other teens came forward saying they too could be the baby's father, because they claimed to have had sex with the girl.
It is still not clear who the baby's father is."
