" We are developing a wearable and modular device allowing users to perceive and respond to spatial information using haptic cues in an intuitive and unobstrusive way.The system is composed of an array of "optical-hair modules", each of which senses range information and transduces it as an appropriate vibro-tactile cue on the skin directly beneath it. An analogy for our artificial sensory system in the animal world would be the cellular cilia, insect antennae, as well as the specialized sensory hairs of mammalian whiskers. In the future, this modular interface may cover precise skin regions or be distributed in over the entire body surface and then function as a double-skin with enhanced and tunable sensing capabilities. We speculate that for a particular category of tasks (such as clear path finding and collision avoidance), the efficiency of this type of sensory transduction may be greater than what can be expected from more classical vision-to-tactile substitution systems. Among the targeted applications of this interface are visual prosthetics for the blind, augmentation of spatial awareness in hazardous working environments, as well as enhanced obstacle awareness for car drivers (in this case the extended-skin sensors may cover the surface of the car). "

Stonehenge - A Robotic Digital Clock

Stonehenge uses a CrustCrawler Smart Arm and a Parallax Propeller chip to display the current time. All the digits needed to display the time are located on cards positioned in a semi-circle around the left and right sides of the arm. The time itself is displayed in front of the arm. This gives the clock a "Stonehenge" like appearance. There are a total of 14 cards. Each card has two digits with one on each side. The software planner determines which card and which side is needed to display the time and then sends the necessary movement commands to the arm. The Jetpack: For $100,000 Coming Next Year?

On Tuesday, an inventor from New Zealand unveiled what he calls "the world's first practical jetpack" at the EAA AirVenture, the gigantic annual air show here. The inventor, Glenn Martin, 48, who has spent 27 years developing the devices, said he hoped to begin selling them next year for $100,000 apiece. It stands about five feet tall and its rotors are encased in two large ducts that look a bit like cupcakes. It rests on three legs. The Jetpack with twin rotors and its 200-horsepower engine which produces 600 lbs of thrust and can be piloted 30 miles in 30 minutes on a full tank of fuel gas - it carries five gallons. Operated by a joy stick-like control. "There is nothing that even comes close to the dream that the jetpack allows you to achieve." Robert Thompson.
