The 'energy return wheel' concept by colorado-based designer Brian Russell demonstrates the possibilities of advanced wheel technologies. Instead of air, it uses rubber stretched over a series of carbon nano tube reinforced composite rods to provide its cushioning. These rods can be adjusted, changing the tension of the rubber to suit different types of terrain, improves flexing and recoil cycling.

His bike is put together using recycled card board and will only cost $9 to $12 to produce, and Gafni hopes they hit the market in 2013 for around $60. Everything except the chain and brakes is cardboard, coated with painted waterproof resin. The current prototype weighs 20 pounds, and can carry riders weighing up to 485 pounds.

Bike enthusiast and designer Izhar Gafni built a functioning bicycle made for $9 out of recycled cardboard. Idea of another inventor's cardboard canoe project.
"The Cardboard Bicycle can withstand water and humidity, coated with a strong layer of brown and white material, making the finished product look like it is made of hard lightweight plastic and can carry riders weighing up to 220 kilograms. The cost to make the bicycle is around $9-$12 and the manufacturer expects that the cost to the consumer would be around $60-$90 depending on what parts they choose to add on."
