Students Build a Car the Blind Can Drive

Array
Car  |  Other
Virginia Tech undergrads have built a car that the blind can drive. This semi-autonomous vehicle is equipped with laser range finders, computer with voice software and other sensory technology that helps direct visually impaired drivers to take the wheel on a closed course:
We are not only excited about the vehicle itself, but also the potential spinoff technologies from this project that could end up helping the blind,¡± Dennis Hong, the director of the university¡¯s Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory said.
"The Blind Driver Challenge team at Virginia Tech¡¯s Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory built the buggy. The steering wheel is hooked up to a distance monitor that gathers information from laser range finders, and it uses voice software to tells the driver how far to turn the wheel. For example, the monitor will tell the driver ¡°turn left three clicks.¡± As the driver does that, the monitor makes three clicking noises.
A vibrating vest provides cues to follow when accelerating and decelerating. The vest vibrates in different places ¡ª the back, the belly and the shoulders ¡ª to convey different commands. When the entire vest vibrates, it means, ¡°Slam on the brakes!¡±

This woman is fake! Ford has designed a woman for their latest-generation Fiesta, named Antonella(photo above)! Virtual model Antonella is the personification of a profile created from demographic research about the Fiesta¡¯s target customer, said Moray Callum, executive director of Ford Americas design. NY time writes:
"Antonella is an attractive 28-year old woman who lives in Rome. Her life is focused on friends and fun, clubbing and parties. She is also completely imaginary. She was the guiding personality for the Ford Verve, a design study that served as the basis for the latest-generation Fiesta.
A character invented by Ford designers to help them imagine cars better tailored to their intended customers, she embodies a philosophy that guides the company's design studios these days: to design the car, first design the driver...
Invented characters get everyone on the same page," Mr. Callum said. "Personalizing gives context to the information we have. Sometimes the target demographics are difficult to relate to by, say, a 35-year-old male designer.
...Ford's goal in using made-up characters is that they will help produce cars that transcend national traits and are instead built around international

Designed by Harsha Vardhan. The 'Transport TW' a futuristic car that generates power from magnetic field generated by on-board electricity powered systems. The Transporter TW(Twin Wheel) is based around an electric engine which produces a magnetic field to drive the large wheels. The wheel rims are suspended over a superconducting fluid where the changing magnetic field produces the motion needed to propel the vehicle. The power generator and motion is thus smooth, nearly noiseless and green. The rider contorls the vehicle from the swivel seat, enters or leaves through a port at the rear of the cockpit.
