It's a project on kickstarter, Good idea... or terrible?

You asked, good idea or terrible?
Not terrible.. but IMHO, not a good idea.

The temptation is to look down at the device to use it, even to text.  In many places "use" of a phone even "hands free" while driving is an offence because your attention is divided and not on the road ahead.

Free rotation of the steering wheel could also be hindered as you can't fully grip the wheel in the mount location especially when the wheel is being turned, your grip could slip or be dislodged.

Terrible. So you supposedly use it when stationary, isn't that what hands are for?
Criminally dangerous to use, utterly irresponsible to market. Pointless.
They should be ashamed of themselves.
Steer safe? Steer clear.

this is a good idea, the more people we can kill who use their phones in cars the better.

For several years our taxi drivers in Ukraine are using nokia 1100 series and place them right in the steering wheel. BUT WITHOUT ANY CASES! Idea is not fresh but fun.
