Designer Daizi Zheng has designed an eco friendly phone for Nokia, which runs on Coca-Cola drinks. Yes, its fuel cells generates electricity from carbohydrates(sugar) in the Coke and it can run on any sugary water, not just Coke. Daizi writes:
"The concept is using bio battery to replace the traditional battery to create a pollution free environment. Bio battery is an ecologically friendly energy generates electricity from carbohydrates (currently sugar) and utilizes enzymes as the catalyst. By using bio battery as the power source of the phone, it only needs a pack of sugary drink and it generates water and oxygen while the battery dies out.
Bio battery has the potential to operate three to four times longer on a single charge than conventional lithium batteries and it could be fully biodegradable. Meanwhile, it brings a whole new perception to batteries and afternoon tea. "

This is a concept it is also a fairy tale

How is this environmentally friendly?  The sugar is grown, shipped to a Coke factory, put into Aluminium cans, shipped to a warehouse, trucked to stores, driven home, then poured into a phone which has extremely low power requirements...

Get a hand crank or solar recharger.. far more environmentally friendly, and no need to keep buying Coke...

Dave, as the article mentions, there's no need to use Coca-Cola as the source. It's only used as an example, because Coke is the most globally spread and recognizable suger-based drink in the world.
You could just as well make your own sugar-solution at home and go out. The use of a canned beverage is only if you're about to run out of energy.
The problem with your crank/solar solution is that it still uses conventional batteries; which pollutes like there's no tomorrow. Unless you envision people cranking away when they talk or only use their cell-phones in daylight, under a clear blue sky, then your idea is quite a non-starter.

Pederson,
You my friend are a Dick head, you do not need a blue sky and a sunny day for solar panels to work, they can run off natural light, or even artificial light although not giving as much power as on a fully sunny day this will still work, therefore you incorrect, FYL! :)

Ok, it takes more energy to process sugar,  ship the raw materals to a Coke factory, make Coke cans, make the Coke, can the Coke, ship it to the stores, and take it home...Like a good 3000% WORSE for the enviorment...And  even if you just put sugar water in it, it will take more energy to process the damn sugar!!!
