Not too long ago DARPA put out a broad agency announcement asking for a flying car - a four-person, vertical takeoff and landing-capable vehicle that can deal with off road conditions as well as take to the skies. AVX Aircraft has come up with a proposal, releasing some mockups of a dual-rotor, ducted-fan driven aircraft  and its concept looks pretty close.
This four-seater flying car is designed to carry a 1,000 pounds 250 miles on a single tank of gas, and can travel 80 miles per hour while in the air and 140 miles on land. Unfolding the rotor blades for flight should convert the vehicle from road mode to aircraft in just 60 seconds. This concept is pretty COol!

Cool concept that you can drop in anywhere with 4 ppl, but no need for the "car" part of this machine.  Why drive anywhere if you can fly there?
